Koh Samui Restaurants & Dining
Bophut Restaurants & Dining

Step back in time in Bophut's Fisherman's Village and dine in Style as you gaze out on nostalgic wooden houses and quaint local shops reminding one of days gone by in Samui. You'll find Thai, French, Italian, Indian, Mexican and seafood outlets here. There are also several pubs and a couple of bakeries offering standard European-Style snacks and typical British and Australian pub food.

The Beach Road is rich in restaurants, from the most elegant to the most basic. Here, visitors can dine in old Chinese shop-houses now converted to use as restaurants and cafes. Broadly speaking the restaurants on the sea view side of the road can be counted on to be more expensive than the land-facing side.
Karma Sutra
This is a well-run bar/restaurant/boutique right on the corner at Bophut Pier. A converted wooden Chinese shophouse, the interior is attractively decorated and fitted out with wood. There's a friendly buzz to the place and it's light years away from the bawdy atmosphere of a typical Chaweng or Lamai bar. Meals served all day.

Happy Elephant
Located about halfway down the main drag, encompassing two adjacent properties, the Happy Elephant is an atmospheric, semi al fresco eatery specialising in seafood. There's a buzz in the air as the place gets busy (it can deal with 150 covers) and a jazz band livens things up even more. Owned and managed by Thais, the restaurant also offers a large choice of international dishes as well as Thai food. The service is friendly, with English-speaking staff.

The Mexican
Here's where to score your fajitas, burritos, jumbo Mexican hamburgers and the likes. Complete with bar, tiled floors and a corner oven, The Mexican is nothing too fancy with food to match. Still, it offers a nice break from all that rice and French fries.

Samui Spice

Starfish and Coffee
One of longest-established restaurants in Fisherman's Village, Starfish and Coffee (named after a Prince song in case you were wondering) is also one of its most atmospheric. Split into separate dining and bar areas, the d?cor with heavy, opulent deep red hues combines with ambient chill music to create a Buddha-Bar-On-Sea vibe. Even the pool table has sexy red baize. The food is surprisingly cheap, aimed squarely at the tourist trade, so it doesn't tend to be very spicy or that innovative. There's also an attached boutique, which sells an impressive range of silk-covered ladies shoes, amongst other things.

Location: Central Bophut (Fisherman's Village)
Tel: 077 427 201

Villa Bianca
Fisherman's Village's chicest Italian restaurant, Villa Bianca enjoys a solid reputation as a dependable Italian eatery. The bar area is a perfect place to chat with the affable owners Guido and Malcolm. The restaurant has one of the best selections of champagnes and sparkling wines on offer anywhere on Samui and is also one of the few places on the island to serve tank-fresh lobsters, which find their way into a variety of dishes. The lobster tagliatelle is especially highly recommended.

Tel: 077 245 041
Cuisine: Classic Italian

Juzza Pizza
Juzza Pizza is clearly doing something right to have remained so successful for so long. In an apt reflection of its advancing years, the restaurant has left its long-term home in Chaweng and moved to the more sedate surroundings of Bophut's Fisherman's Village. The setting may have changed but the food remains as fine as ever great Italian dining. The menu is worth reading for the entertainment value alone. Lovely wooden terrace with sea views.

Tel: 077 245 662

Carpe Diem
A white-themed restaurant part of an elegant boutique hotel of the same name, Carpe Diem regularly makes it into the better guide books as a fine-dining venue. Thai dishes served in novel ways with European influence would be the best way to describe the fare here. With a walk-in wine cellar, Carpe Diem takes its tippling a tad more seriously than its neighbours.

Opening Hours: 19:00 23:00
Location: Central Bophut (Fisherman's Village), turn right at the pier
Tel: 077 427 195

The Shack
Take a simple idea: fresh from the barbeque steaks, ribs and burgers. Use only the highest quality meats and fish and serve it all up in large portions with lots of different salads, marinades, dips and dressings and the result, despite the inauspicious, roadside location: a packed restaurant every night. The best way to describe the atmosphere in this self confessed simple Californian burger bar, is just to imagine a summer barbeque with family and friends on a hot Sunday afternoon. Add lots of beer and a healthy dose of American hospitality and you're pretty much there.

Opening Hours: 11:00 14:00 & 18:00 - 00:00
Location: Central Bophut (Fisherman's Village)
Cuisine: Fusion Thai

Set back from the Bophut-Chaweng main road and surrounded by offices, Brio is a little difficult to find but worth looking for if you're hungry for quality Italian-style food, steaks and soups. Air conditioned, with a good wine list and run by two gorgeous Thai girls who speak fluent German (it's true) the atmosphere is pleasantly quiet and relaxed.

Dining On the Rocks
For some, this is the last word in fine dining on Samui and for others the restaurant is merely overpriced and pretentious. Either way you look at it, Dining On the Rocks is impressive and a pretty unforgettable sensual experience. Low lights, sea breezes, gourmet food, an excellent wine list (over 1,000 labels) and probably the best guitarist on the island along with tip-top service all add up to an impressive evening out. Take a credit card along.

Opening Hours: 18:00 when the last guest leaves
Location: In Six Senses Hideaway, Samrong Bay Style: 'Modern interpretive cuisine' (in other words, fusion)
Tel: 077 245 678
Price Range: Luxurious
This award-winning restaurant presents traditional Thai regional dishes with fine-dining touches, sprinkled throughout with culinary flair and brio. The extent of the care put into each dish may be reflected in the high cost of dining here but Belgium Chef Walter Andreini spares no effort in his quest for perfection, even growing his own herbs. Part of the Zazen Resort, it's a beachside stroll away from Bophut Centre.

Opening Hours: 18:00 23:00
Location: Zazen Boutique Resort and Spa
Tel: 077 425 085
Cuisine: Fine dining
Price Range: Luxurious
My Friend Restaurant
Located between Bophut and Big Buddah Beach, My Friend is a popular spot and very different to most of the more up-market dining options in the area. Although the place lacks 'tourist pull' it does however serve the most amazing Thai seafood at incredibly low prices. If you are looking for a bargain meal without too much Style, it's not to be missed.

Opening Hours: 08:00 22:00
Location: Between Bophut and Big Buddha
Tel: 077 425 187
