Koh Samui Nathon Beach

Nathon Bay, Located on the northwest of Samui, Nathon is the major port and seafront settlement where express and night ferries from the piers in Surat Thani arrive and tourists can get away to other beaches and islands in the Gulf of Thailand.

Nathon is one of the tantalizing spots for a little town life. It is a tourist town now where shops, restaurants, tour agencies and hotels are located. In a sense, amid the touristy atmosphere you can still experience an authentic local village through a walk in town. Nathon retains a few old teak Chinese shop-houses and cafes.

This bay is home to Nathon Town, where most of the island's local residents live. The beach is not really attractive, but the small town is worth a stop. Visit the fresh market on the main street to discover the variety of fruits and vegetables typical of southern Thailand.

All government offices and bank are located in Nathon and it is the primary point of connection with the mainland and the other islands. Shopping here is less expensive than in Chaweng or Lamai, and there are lots of interesting knick-knacks for sale. Most shops are on the inland road, which is one-way heading south. However, the ocean road has a number of good restaurants for breakfast or lunch, and the teak shop house lined middle road gives a decent glimpse into Samuiís local world.

A little farther down the road going south is the way to "Best Mountain Viewpoint", which affords travelers spectacular sights from a height of 467 meters. The way up to the viewpoint is a bit difficult to find. Shortly after Wat Chaeng look for a sign with "Tazan View" (this is not a spelling mistake) on it. If you feel confident in your driving skills, you can try the 6-Km drive to eat a simple lunch on a wooden terrace overlooking Maenam and Bophut Bay. Weather permitting; you'll also be treated to a splendid view of Phangan Island. The first five kilometers are nicely paved, but be aware that the last kilometer is rather steep, slippery and dusty. It is not recommended in case of rain. If you'd rather not attempt the drive yourself, there are many tour companies next to the pier in Nathon Town offering well-organized trips in Land Rovers with qualified drivers.
